Dial-In VPN Setup (Windows 7)
This article explains the setup process of connecting a Windows 7 computer to a Microsoft-based VPN server such as Microsoft Small Business Server or Windows Server.
Before you begin, you must ensure you have all the correct details to hand and make sure that your account has permission to dial in. If you aren’t sure of any of the details or you encounter any problems please raise contact the helpdesk. The details required are:
- Domain Name
- VPN Server Address
Find and open “Network and Sharing Center”
Click “Setup a new connection or network”
Choose “Connect to a workplace”
If you already have connections configured on your PC you will need to choose “No, create new connection”
Choose “Use my Internet Connection (VPN)”
Enter the VPN Server Address into the “Internet address” box and type a name for the connection so you can identify it. Also tick “Allow other people to use this connection”. Press next.
Enter your username, password and domain. You can save your password if you wish by ticking the box. Press connect.
Connecting and Disconnecting
Dialling in and disconnecting from the VPN in Windows 7 can be achieved many ways. The simplest way is to use system tray in the bottom right hand corner. You will see either a wireless signal icon if you are connected wirelessly, or a computer icon if you are connected with a network cable. Click on the icon, locate the connection configured above and press connect:
